The nights were fucking freezing; ice formed on the inside of the tents - the fire buckets at the door to the tent were frozen solid in the mornings and ice formed on the sleeping bag where you breathed. It was FUCKING cold, dry and dusty.
Humpf all this national service and becuase it's so cold I'm not even getting to enjoy looking at any of my fellow proud young male south africans skin. Humpf. Well that was till the tight little 10 person shower unit - only 5 nozzels - ok that wasn't so bad... kinda like school... mmmm
Anyway away from the naked wet men - back to the land of brutal apartheid oppression - browns, guns people shouting at you - samels - buffels and... good GOD this is Africa! Ganja!
Right - I keep getting lost - oppression, aliens, naked wet men - guns - Thokoza 1987
The Rose of Soweto was boxing that night - the mood in Thokoza was jovial - a few days before we had raided [in a completely botched operation] a hostel. We bashed in doors - disturbed people sleeping, having sex, eating - living lives - trashed their rooms - took their 'weapons' - their weed, and forced some naked into the square...
Then the police left - we the young (buff boys) military backup to the cops were left with 900 very angry residents - oh by the way - we had guns, but no bullets...
So we walked, out of Thokoza, past the KFC got some munchies - walked back to the police station where all those involved in the raid had knocked off and gone home leaving only the man behind the desk.
We sat in the station commanders office - we got bored waiting for our lift and went through the files where lo and BEHOLD - the ONE half banky that had been confiscated from the hostel raid, along with the knife that had a cloth around the handle (I think it was more the man's only form of buttering his bread than a weapon)
We skinned up and went for a drive in the yellow wagon through Thokoza.
Back to the night of the fight with the Rose of Soweto. We like the crowd were jovial in the back of that Buffel; (didn't I just tell you we scored a banky???!!!???) well we were all 14 of us; someone threw a rock against the side of the 6inch thick metal hull of the buffel - our captain started screaming orders - I was HIGH for the 4th fucking time in my life; having a good time with the people we were "protecting" - now
GO GO GO !!!
Where? Muther fucker? Where?
The highlight of my military career - jumping out of a buffel into a crowd of 10,000 listening to the winning of a boxing match on a loudspeaker system... high... with no bullets...
Oh fuck - did the aliens land in the wrong fucking place.
Well now some 21 years later - Thokoza - is seemingly even more violently restless now than I remember when I was all dressing in brown, with all those young boys standing so close, firm and hot up next to me...
What do I have to say to Thokoza - today all these years later?
Fuck the Zimbabweans?
Yeah baby I would be one, but I don't recognise that failed "Zimbabwe" experiment!
Punk's not dead! Burn baby burn!!!

Police warn of Thokoza Township blockade
Ekurhuleni Metro Police have urged motorists to avoid Thokoza township's main road, Khumalo Street, because of the unrest in the area.Thokoza residents have blockaded the street with stones and trees. Kobeli Mokheseng, Metro Police spokesperson, says the reason for the unrest is not clear.
Mokheseng says: “If you will be using Khumalo Street between Skhosana and Sweet Khoza exercise the necessary caution or alternatively use another route, as there is road blockage as there are many people behind this. We do not know what is causing this at this stage.”
Mokheseng also says there is a huge police presence with the SAPS and Metro police trying to calm the situation.
