Police may have to create separate cells for gay inmates, the Saturday Star reported. Jackie Selebi, the national police commissioner, told MPs yesterday that officers were experiencing problems with gay inmates who wanted to be locked up with other gay inmates.
"I do not know what we are going to do as police - whether at some stage we will need to have cells like those for gay people," he said.
Selebi was recently criticised for suggesting that the government consider legalising prostitution for the 2010 Soccer World Cup. Selebi said he was not advocating prostitution, but wanted the government to consider how the issue would be approached. - Sapa
